I plan to go on a skiing trip. Will this be covered by my standard travel insurance policy?
In most cases, no. The single-trip standard insurance policy does not cover activities that are perceived as "risky" such as skiing, backpacking and mountain climbing. And indeed, there are a lot of things that can go wrong during a skiing trip.
Even if you are already a skiing expert, you are still dependent on the quality of your ski equipment, the piste or the slope, as well as the ability of the people who are also skiing with you.
There are, however, ski travel insurance plans that are designed to cover you when you go skiing or for any other winter sport. It is really highly recommended that you have yourself covered with ski travel insurance so that in case something happens to you, you will have help in meeting the unexpected expenses. When you're in a foreign country, you will surprised at how quickly the medical bills can pile up! If you are not insured, all these expenses will have to be paid by you.
Ski travel insurance is quite useful, it not only provides you with the standard benefits that travel insurance already offers. It can also cover things like unused lift pass days or unused equipment. It can also help to pay for emergency repatriation or medical treatment. Additional coverage that this kind of insurance can give includes personal liability, piste rescue expenses and piste closure cover.
You can book your ski travel insurance only up to the number of days your holiday will be. You can also opt to waive the excess, for an additional premium, of course. You can arrange for cover for a skiing holiday as short as 3 days or one as long as 180 days.
If the excess is waived, when you have a claim against a medical benefit, you don't have to pay the deductible or what is considered as your share of the claim.
The good news is that there are also travel insurance providers that let children under 18 go free if you take a ski travel insurance for your family. And if you're fortunate enough to be able to go on skiing trips for three times a year, you can buy annual skiing travel insurance, so that you can save up on the premiums.
