If you were a non-smoker when you bought the life insurance policy but now occasionally smoke a cigar would this raise your rates?
As long as you were honest when you filled up the policy, the life insurance company is obligated to fulfill the terms of the policy contract. If you were indeed a non-smoker when you applied for the policy, then there shouldn't be a problem.
When it is time for you or your beneficiaries to file a claim, they will pay the entire death benefit. This will be, of course, after the life insurance company has investigated the cause of the death. Smoking the occasional cigar will not really show up in your death certificate. So there is no reason to fear that you will lose your insurance.
As for the premium rates, the life insurance policy issued remains in place and in force, with the premiums staying the same.
Now, if you would like to have additional coverage, you will have to answer additional medical questions. You should disclose that you have been smoking the occasional cigar. This shouldn't raise your premiums, but if it did, it will just be for the additional coverage.
Remember, it is best to make full disclosure in an insurance application. Do not risk a few amounts in premiums which may endanger your policy.
