What are the Roth IRA contribution limits for 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009?
Holders of a Roth IRA can invest the maximum of their annual compensation, provided that their adjusted gross income does not exceed certain limits. In 2010 these limits will be eliminated, thus making Roth IRAs accessible to anyone.
The annual contribution limits applicable to Roth IRAs are the same as for traditional IRAs.
In the years 2006 and 2007 standard Roth IRA contributions were restricted to $4,000 per annum but they rose to $5,000 for tax years 2008 and 2009. As of 2010, the regular contribution limits will increase in increments of $500, depending on the cost of living index.
Individuals aged 50 or older have the right to an annual catch-up contribution of $1,000, on top of the regular contributions. Simply put, if you are over 50 and a holder of a Roth IRA, you can contribute to it a maximum of $6,000 per year.
| Tax Year | Standard Contribution | Total (plus catch-up contribution) |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 | $4,000 | $5,000 |
| 2007 | $4,000 | $5,000 |
| 2008 | $5,000 | $6,000 |
